A mobile hair and makeup artist provides professional hairstyling, makeup, or both at your location rather than requiring you to visit a salon or studio.

The artist brings the professional products, tools and equipment needed for the service and sets up in a suitable area at your home, hotel, venue or other agreed location.

For makeup, this can include anything from natural makeup through to full glamour, bridal makeup, event makeup and camera-ready looks for photography, television or commercial work.

For hair, it's important to understand the difference between mobile hairstyling and mobile hairdressing.

Having both services would therefore put a typical starting budget at around $240–$360 per person, before any applicable travel, parking, early-start or other booking fees.

The final cost of a mobile booking can depend on where you're getting ready, the number of people, the services required, the time of the booking and how many artists are needed.

Does mobile hair and makeup cost more?

Not necessarily.

Many artists charge the same basic service price regardless of whether they're working from a studio or travelling to you. What can make a mobile appointment more expensive are the costs associated with getting the artist to your location.

These can include travel time, petrol, tolls, parking and early-start fees.

Melbourne CBD hotel bookings are a good example. Your artist may spend a significant amount of time getting into the city and could then have a hefty hotel parking bill. Those costs may be added to your booking rather than built into the hair or makeup price itself.

Always check what's included in the quote rather than comparing the service price alone.

Where can a mobile hair and makeup artist come to?

Mobile artists can generally work anywhere there's a suitable space to set up, subject to the individual artist or company's service area.

Common locations include:

As a general guide, at JPC we allow approximately 45–60 minutes for a professional makeup application and 45–60 minutes for hairstyling per person.

The actual time can vary depending on the look, the client's hair, the number of people being styled and the type of booking.

A simple hairstyle may take less time than intricate Hollywood waves or a detailed updo. Likewise, some makeup applications are quicker than others.

For a single person having both services, allowing around 1½–2 hours is generally sensible.

For group bookings, having more than one artist can make a big difference to your starting time.

Can several people have hair and makeup at the same time?

Yes, provided there are enough artists available.

This is one of the biggest advantages of booking through a hair and makeup team rather than relying on a single stylist for a large group.

If six people require both services, one person attempting all 12 appointments consecutively could create an extremely long getting-ready schedule.

With several artists, hair and makeup appointments can run simultaneously.

For weddings, we normally work backwards from the time everybody needs to be finished. That might be determined by the photographer's arrival or when the bridal party needs to start getting dressed.

From there, we calculate the number of services, how long they're likely to take and how many artists are required to complete everything comfortably.

Nobody wants the bride having one eye done while the wedding car is waiting outside.

What occasions can I book mobile hair and makeup for?

Weddings are an obvious one, but they're far from the only reason people book mobile artists.

Mobile hair and makeup can be booked for:

Usually, no.

A professional mobile hair and makeup artist should arrive with the products, tools and equipment needed to perform the booked service.

If you have a particular product you love, an allergy or sensitivity, or something your skin reacts badly to, tell your artist before the appointment. Our stylists are generally happy to work with a client's own preferred products where needed.

For hair, you may need to supply personal items such as clip-in extensions, decorative accessories or a veil. Check this when booking so there are no surprises on the day.

What should I check before booking a mobile hair and makeup artist?

A beautiful Instagram feed is a good start, but it shouldn't be the only thing you check.

Look through the artist's actual work and consider whether you consistently like it. If you're booking for several people, look for evidence that they can work confidently with different ages, skin tones, face shapes, hair textures and personal styles.

Reviews are useful too, particularly when they mention things beyond the finished makeup or hair. Reliability, punctuality, communication and the ability to stay on schedule matter enormously when somebody is coming to you for an important event.

For many bookings, the biggest advantage is simply convenience.

You can get ready where you already are, keep your clothes and belongings in one place and avoid travelling immediately after having your hair and makeup finished.

For weddings and groups, the benefit can be much greater. Several artists can work together while the rest of the bridal party gets dressed, eats breakfast, deals with flowers, chats to the photographer or does any of the other hundred things happening on a wedding morning.

There are additional costs in some cases, particularly travel and parking, so mobile service isn't automatically the cheapest option.

But when timing, convenience and keeping a group together matter, it can make the day considerably easier.
